Here it is! “Birds I View” the Pendant! Media: Sterling silver, NuGold, copper, opal, blue topaz, prosthetic eye, paper bird, and glass. Barbara Spohn-Lillo, a maxillofacial anaplastologist, and good friend of mine, made the ocular by hand and donated it to me to put into my design.
This piece is a special commission for the Vesalius Trust and the Association of Medical Illustrators Annual Meeting, being held in Richmond this year. The theme for the auction art is “eyes” – so this piece will be donated and auctioned off to raise funds for education in biomedical communications. So – get your wallet out, come to Richmond and bid!
I plan to make more of this type of thing – using odd objects with elements of nature, birds, flowers and other naturalist motifs. This is probably the weirdest and most complicated piece I have made to date. So stay tuned for more interesting compositions!
Note: No humans, including the artist, were injured during the creation of this piece.
August 1, 2009:
Here is an update: Well, I officially have just sold my very first piece: the “Birds I View” pendant went off well at the auction and I am happy to say it went to a great friend and colleague who is the proud owner, and walked out of the auction wearing it around her neck. Thanks Lisa!!
